THE heartbroken dad of a young Irish doctor who died in the Philippines said "we are so grateful for the memories" as her funeral mass took place today.

Meg Haugh, 26, passed away suddenly after falling ill and collapsed about halfway through the three-hour canyoneering activity on the tropical island of Badian in southwest Cebu on Thursday, May 2.

Her heartbroken family said Meg died in the company of "her good friend Tessa while exploring the beautiful Philippines."

It is understood that the two had been part of a group who were taking part in adventure activities which included travelling through canyons, streams and waterfalls by jumping, rappelling and swimming.

Among her companions on the trip was a doctor with another group who attempted to provide medical assistance but was unsuccessful.

People present at the scene had initially struggled to contact emergency services due to the lack of signal from their location.

During her funeral on Saturday morning, Meg's father Richard spoke to the congregation and shared his memories of his daughter, especially her close relationship with twin brother Marty.

He said: "Recurring themes for Meg were family, friends and food. She arrived with her twin brother Marty in January 98.

"Meg was a day older and she looked after Marty.

"When the twins were about three or four, I was giving out to Meg for something and her normally laid back twin brother lost his temper and absolutely went for me to defend Meg.

Richard went on to speak about her relationship with her older sister Sally, and recalled when Sally began primary school, Meg was so jealous of the uniform that one had to be bought for her to wear to playschool.

"She made wonderful friends, she loved to chat to Sally about important matters such as Say Yes to the Dress, Bake Off and Love Island."

As for her brother William, Richard recalled the time when the naturally curly haired Meg attempted to straighten her locks when her younger brother got involved and Meg styled his hair for him – which he wasn't a fan of.

Richard went on to share Meg's love for adventure and her journey that took her around the world.

He continued: "When she was about 16, Meg discovered going out.

"Like her mum, Meg was always down for an adventure, trying something new and being with the girls.

"She loved to travel and she interrailed around Europe. She went to Rhode Island on a J1 and had a ball. Like so many of her colleagues, she left for Australia in 2022. She worked hard in Perth and went on quite a few wine tasting tours.

"Catherine and I visited Meg last year, Marty visited her in November, and she was home for Christmas.

"We are so grateful for the memories and time spent with her."

Meg was due to arrive back to Ireland this summer to begin working in Galway when tragedy struck.

Meg opted on taking the "scenic route" back to Ireland with her wide group of friends, travelling through Asia from Australia.

Her choked up father added: "Last week her heart gave out, she was doing what she loved with the people she loved."
