A New York dad unintentionally started a tradition with his son that sweetly documents how much he's grown over the years.

Nick Tomasso, 44, is going viral after posting photos on his Instagram and Reddit showcasing the adorable annual tradition he started with his son Jackson, now 11. The photos, which go all the way back to when the tween was very young, feature the father-son duo sitting together wearing similar Batman t-shirts. Tomasso tells PEOPLE that the sweet tradition was "really all unplanned" and happened randomly one day.

"When he was really young, I was randomly wearing a Batman t-shirt and I had put on a Batman onesie for him and thought it would make a cute picture," he explains. "Fast forward to year two, and he and I both had new Batman shirts and thought it would once again make a cute picture, while I had forgotten about the first picture from a year earlier."

"It wasn't until year three that I realized I had unknowingly created a yearly tradition and decided from that point on it was something that I had to continue with him," he adds. "From that point on, I thought it would be a cool yearly thing to do to show the progression of time for both him and I."

The proud dad tells PEOPLE that she's been sharing the pictures of him and Jackson since his son was born, adding that everyone who seems them gets "a kick out of seeing the progression of the pictures."

"I've been posting it on my social media pages since my son was born, and everyone always seems to get a kick out of seeing the progression of the pictures for both he and I," he says. "Looking back over the years, it brings fond memories of time with my son, all the good times we've shared, and how rewarding it is to be a parent even though it is an incredibly tough job."

With his social media pages private, it wasn't until Tomasso decided to post collages of the photos to the Made Me Smile subreddit that it went viral.

"It blew in viewership and all the people in that community loved the tradition as well," he shares. "It is something that I look forward to doing each year and also gives me the ability to realize just how fast time flies when you're a parent and how fast your kids grow up."

The doting dad says his favorite part of the tradition is looking back at his son's growth year after year. He shares that he plans to continue taking the photos for "years to come."

"I love looking back at how small he was as a baby vs. how big he has grown each year," he tells PEOPLE. "I plan on doing this tradition in the years to come for as long as both he and I can. As he continues to get older each year, it will be even more funny to watch him outgrow me as his dad."

For the proud dad, who's "always been a big superhero and sci-fi fan," says the tradition also became another opportunity for the father-son pair to bond and find similar interests.

"I grew up with Michael Keaton's Batman and that has always been one of my favorite superheroes since I was a kid," he says. "As time progresses, kids typically begin to take interest in the same things as their parents, especially at a young age. My son quickly followed my interests in superheroes, music taste, and cars, so it became an easy and fun tradition to start."

Tomasso tells PEOPLE that he doesn't have any major plans for the photos, but ultimately just loves the yearly tradition.

"[I'll] just keep them as memories. Maybe create a collage at some point. Maybe a highlight reel at some point for a milestone birthday of his," he says. "Other than that, documenting the yearly tradition is a great way to show the passage of time and the bond between a father and son."
