Princess Diana's brother Charles Spencer is opening up about writing the eulogy that he read at her funeral in September 1997.
"I flew back [to the U.K.] – I was living in South Africa – I flew back from Cape Town overnight. [I had a] very sweet stewardess help me, because I was in bits," Spencer said on TheRosebud podcast.
"I had a big, thick address book, and I thought, 'I want to find someone who's going to make the speech for her.' And I got to 'Z' and I hadn't found anyone," Spencer explained. "[I] got off the plane in Heathrow, called my mother, I said, 'I can't think who's going to give the eulogy. And I've got an awful feeling it's going to have to be me.' And she said, 'Well, it is going to be you. Your sisters and I have decided it,'" he recalled.

Spencer said he started putting things together for a "very traditional eulogy" but quickly realized "that's not who she was." Instead, he decided that he wanted to "speak for" Diana, not about her. He went on to think about his nephews, Prince William and Prince Harry, and it was in those moments that the eulogy came to him.
"I wrote it in an hour and a half and, yeah, that was it, really," he said.
Back in 2017, Spencer opened up about giving his late sister's eulogy in an interview with People magazine.
"I was looking directly at William and Harry across her coffin. In the final paragraph I had run out of energy, almost out of oxygen. I had to punch each syllable out of the base of my stomach," he recalled.
Many royal watchers commented on the Instagram clip of Spencer's interview on The Rosebud podcast, many recalling how lovely his eulogy was.
"The way that he delivered that eulogy and the words he chose were perfect. You can hear the pain and anger in his voice, the way it cracked right at the end. It's unforgettable for me," one person wrote.
"That eulogy will go down as one of the most powerful heartfelt speeches in modern history. I remember it like it was yesterday. The Royals were squirming in their seatsI actually stood up in my living room at the end and applauded with tears rolling down my face. The slow thundering outside the Abbey when the people outside started to clap was one of the most powerful things I have ever heard. Almost like Diana was getting the angels in heaven to clap for her! Well done Sir," someone else said.
Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997, after a car accident in Paris, France.
