Jelly Roll has always found humor in how people react to his face tattoos—especially when his daughter's friends were little.
In an exclusive interview with Taste of Country published Monday, January 5, the country star shared the lighthearted story he used to tell his daughter Bailee's friends when they were little and curious about his ink.
"When she was in kindergarten it was so funny because all of her little friends would go, 'What is all that stuff on your face?'" Jelly Roll, 41, recalled. "I would go 'You won't believe this, I only draw this on when I come see y'all so y'all are excited about it.'"
He admitted the explanation only worked for so long. "Finally, they were like, 'How do you draw it on the same way every time?' I said, 'I got the little sticker things now because I been coming so much.'"
As Bailee got older, the jokes gave way to tougher realities. Jelly, whose real name is Jason DeFord, shared that some parents were hesitant to let their kids spend time at their house because of his appearance. That theme carried into a recent conversation with Men's Health, where the artist pushed back on the idea that his tattoos are about attention. When the outlet suggested his appearance could be read that way, he laughed and explained it's "the polar opposite."
"The way shame sometimes shows itself is not always the way we expect it to be," he said. "We think shame is somebody in the streets on their knees, with their head down. But shame sometimes is pride."
Jelly Roll has been undergoing a massive personal transformation. Over the past year, he's lost more than 275 pounds, shaved his face for the first time in a decade, and consistently dropped between 9 and 15 pounds per month.

That journey has reshaped nearly every part of his life, including his marriage. During a December appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, he spoke candidly about how his weight once affected intimacy with his wife, Bunnie XO. "My sex life was horrible," he admitted, adding that physical limitations made even basic moments difficult. Today, he describes a completely different lifestyle—one centered on sobriety, movement, and showing up fully for his family.
